[Guest Member Blog Post] Retail Media’s Next Competitive Advantage Is Intelligence with DMEXCO

This week, we hand over to the team at our partner event, DMEXCO, to explore why intelligence, data and AI are becoming retail media’s next competitive advantage.

Retail Media has entered a new phase. What started as an additional advertising channel has become one of the most strategically important building blocks of modern commerce. Today, the market is no longer defined by media inventory alone, but by data quality, AI capabilities and connected customer experiences. The competitive edge is shifting from buying more Retail Media to making Retail Media smarter, more connected and more measurable.

Amazon is accelerating this transformation by expanding its advertising business, integrating Agentic AI and turning its commerce platform into a media ecosystem. For retailers, brands and technology providers, the message is clear: Retail Media is evolving into the layer that connects marketing, CRM, commerce, loyalty and product innovation. Competitive advantage will increasingly depend on intelligent data rather than media scale alone.

Three developments are shaping this next chapter.

1. Closed-Loop Measurement Becomes the New Standard

For years, digital marketing has relied on proxy metrics such as impressions, clicks and ROAS. Retail Media changes the equation by enabling brands to measure advertising impact all the way through to the actual purchase.

Closed-loop measurement is quickly becoming an industry expectation. The real differentiator is the data architecture that connects CRM, e-commerce, loyalty programs and point-of-sale data into a unified customer view.

Many organisations still analyse onsite campaigns, offsite media and in-store sales separately, making it difficult to identify which investments generate incremental business outcomes. Companies that connect these data sources gain more reliable attribution, better identity resolution and a much clearer understanding of the customer journey.

Measurement is evolving as well. Incrementality testing, multi-touch attribution and media mix modeling are increasingly complementing or replacing traditional click-based KPIs. The conversation is shifting from media efficiency toward measurable business impact.

2. Omnichannel transforms retail media into a commerce ecosystem

Retail Media no longer lives inside the online store alone. Consumers move seamlessly between retailer websites, marketplaces, mobile apps, email, social platforms, physical stores and increasingly AI-powered shopping assistants.

The opportunity lies in connecting every touchpoint through shared data. Yet many organisations still manage onsite, offsite and in-store media separately, resulting in fragmented customer experiences and inconsistent measurement.

Amazon illustrates where the market is heading by combining sponsored advertising, personalised recommendations, Prime Video inventory and AI-powered advertising into one connected ecosystem.

Physical retail is evolving at the same pace. Digital signage, electronic shelf labels, smart shelves and connected loyalty programmes are linking in-store interactions directly to digital customer profiles. The distinction between retailer, media platform and commerce ecosystem is steadily disappearing. For brands, Retail Media is no longer an isolated advertising discipline. It is becoming the foundation of an integrated omnichannel commerce strategy.

3. Data Becomes the Real Product

Retail Media’s greatest strategic asset is first-party data. Retailers possess unique insights into customer intent, purchase behaviour, search patterns, basket composition and price sensitivity. Forward-looking organisations increasingly use these insights far beyond campaign reporting.

Retail Media is evolving into a strategic data platform that supports marketing, merchandising, assortment planning and product development alike. Three developments are particularly driving this shift:

  • Strategic data partnerships between retailers and brands
  • Privacy-first collaboration through Data Clean Rooms
  • New commercial models built around data licensing and analytics

Real purchasing behaviour enables companies to optimise pricing, packaging, product variants and assortments based on actual demand rather than assumptions. At the same time, AI-powered shopping assistants are raising the bar for product content. Structured, machine-readable product information, rich attributes and high-quality imagery increasingly determine which products remain visible in AI-driven commerce experiences. Companies investing in AI-ready product data today improve discoverability while preparing for the next generation of commerce.

The Next Chapter Starts with Collaboration

Retail Media has moved beyond experimentation. The question is no longer whether it works, but how organisations can scale it across increasingly complex commerce environments.

That requires more than new advertising formats. It demands shared measurement standards, connected data architectures, AI-enabled decision-making and closer collaboration between retailers, brands, agencies and technology providers. As Retail Media becomes more deeply integrated into the digital economy, no single player can shape this transformation alone. Industry-wide collaboration and the exchange of best practices will be critical.

These questions are increasingly defining conversations across the industry and will be at the center of DMEXCO 2026, where international leaders from marketing, commerce and technology will discuss how AI, data and new platform dynamics are reshaping digital business.

Executives looking to dive deeper into Retail Media will find dedicated discussions at the Retail & Commerce Media Summit powered by BVDW, while the Commerce Summit powered by BVDW explores topics such as Agentic Commerce, platform strategies and AI-powered customer journeys. For a broader strategic perspective, the Thought Leaders’ Summit powered by brand eins examines the forces shaping the future of the digital economy, from AI and platform ecosystems to regulation and changing consumer behaviour.

A particularly relevant session for brands is the masterclass “The 2027 Playbook: How Smart Brands Connect TV, Retail Media and Amazon for Real Commerce Results”, where Benjamin Weyrich and Sascha Jansen explore how Amazon’s expanding ecosystem is influencing integrated media strategies.
